Modified bitumen is a 2 part low slope roof system that is made when polymers are added to asphalt to change its properties. Modified bitumen roofs have a lot of advantages over other types of membrane roofing and are often seen as the modern alternative to the built up roof. But flat roof is a convenient term for a class of multimembrane systems with very shallow pitches. It was developed as a means to improve roofing membranes when product quality was affected by the use of a lower quality crude oil by product.

No roof should be completely flat or it won t shed water. Developed in europe in the mid 1960s modified bitumen roofing has been used in canada and the united states since about 1975. The 2 part system consists of a base layer and a cap layer. Modified bitumen flat roofing is a single ply system made of asphalt bitumen modified with polymers and reinforced with fiberglass and or polyester.

The base layer provides waterproofing and a surface for the cap to bond to. Modified bitumen was developed in europe during the 1960s and it is a rendition of the old built up roofing bur system. At one time built up roofs burs.
